We cannot go back to the lives of the hunter/gatherers, but neither can we continue in this estrangement from the home of the spirits. A god in heaven is too far away. I don't pretend to know how we will live when we try to re-enter the world of myth. I only hold on to the hope that to bring back wilderness means to live as a wild being, and this will only happen as I rediscover the wild places in my heart. A child and sweet berries on the tongue are as good compasses as I have found.
Mollie Yoneko Matteson is a biologist, who is training in addition as a geographer. She brings these skills to her writing, which celebrates the earth and evokes a more earth-sensitive lifestyle.
